About 9% of pregnant women will become insulin-resistant during pregnancy and will develop gestational diabetes, according to Northwestern Medicine.

Even if you have never had diabetes before, you can develop gestational diabetes later in your pregnancy because your pancreas is working overtime to produce insulin, but not enough.

In most cases, diabetes disappears at the end of pregnancy. It is important to manage your condition with your doctor. Otherwise, your baby's pancreas will produce an extra amount of insulin, stored as fat, which will expose him to high birth weight, low blood sugar, and breathing problems.
