Three students at the University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus have been recently diagnosed with mumps, a virus known for puffy cheeks and a swollen jaw, according to the university 's website Tuesday.

Mumps can be transmitted before symptoms even after 12 days. The virus is usually transmitted through droplets, usually saliva, through the act of sneezing or coughing.

Mumps can lead to deafness, swelling of the brain and / or spinal cord, painful swelling of the testicles or ovaries and, very rarely, death.
