ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) – More and more children have contracted chicken pox in a private school in North Carolina, with a high rate of parents seeking religious exemptions to vaccines.
Asheville Citizen-Times reported that as of Friday, 36 children had contracted chickenpox at Asheville Waldorf School. The newspaper reports that more than two-thirds of the school's 152 students did not receive the vaccine, which became available in the United States in 1995. The school's website says it welcomes children from the school. early childhood to sixth grade.
Dr. Jennifer Mullendore of the Buncombe County Department of Health and Human Services believes the epidemic is a cause for concern. She tells the newspaper that although the virus is not serious for most people, it can result in the hospitalization of some children.
School officials did not immediately respond to an email asking for comments on Monday.
