"Penny Dreadful", the Showtime series that ended after three seasons in 2016, is back.

The cable channel unveiled plans for a spin-off – "Penny Dreadful: The City of Angels" – in a press release issued Monday.

Showtime said the upcoming program would be a "spiritual descendant" from the previous series, which took place in Victorian London and featured characters such as Dr. Frankenstein and Dracula.

The spin-off "opens in 1938 in Los Angeles, a place and a city deeply imbued with Mexican-American folklore and social tensions," revealed the network. The show is also focused on "the conflict between characters related to the deity Santa Muerte and other allies of the devil".

Eva Green, Timothy Dalton and Josh Hartnett are not lucky, but Showtime says that "Penny Dreadful: The City of Angels" will feature an entirely new cast and plot.

The new series was designed by John Logan, who created and produced the previous show.

In a statement, Logan said the program "will have a social conscience and historical awareness that we have chosen not to explore in the stories of London's" Penny Dreadful ".

He added: "We will now tackle specific political, religious, social and racial issues of the historical and real world. In 1938, Los Angeles faced tough questions about his future and his soul. Our characters have to do the same thing. There are no easy answers. There are only powerful questions and striking moral challenges. "

Showtime says the show is expected to begin production next year.
