– The eve of Thanksgiving, there is no place more busy than the Durham Rescue Mission.

Each year, the group spends hours preparing a feast to feed the homeless and needy. This year, needs have increased in Bull City and Raleigh.

Angelique Smith struggles after losing her roof during the summer. The change was particularly difficult for his daughter Akela, aged one year.

"It's not easy at first because you just want the best for your kids," Smith said. "I've been through a difficult time in my life and I've experienced some things before ending up on the street."

This year, Smith is grateful for the basics.

"I'm really grateful for a roof over my head, of course," she said.

She was also grateful for the pizza served by Governor Roy Cooper at the Raleigh Rescue Mission.

"I'll be talking to people who may have a chance, maybe between jobs, who may be in a situation where they're trying to find a place to live," Cooper said.

Smith and his daughter are all these things right now. Cooper has heard similar stories told by other residents of the Rescue Mission and urged the people of the state to help those in need "especially around Thanksgiving."

The Raleigh Rescue Mission is working to ensure that residents live in more permanent homes. Smith said she was looking for a job.

At the Durham Rescue Mission, volunteers spent the night of Wednesday baking turkeys for a feast that was scheduled to begin Thursday afternoon.
