Thanos broke. Now half of the Netflix Marvel universe is gone.
Last week, Netflix shocked MCU fans by announcing Iron fist would have do not come back for a third season. Iron fist was never the favorite Netflix Marvel universe, but the idea that an essential pillar of the interconnected world of Marvel (not to mention a quarter of The defenders) could disappear was almost unfathomable. And yet, it has happened.
And while the fans were still shocked by the loss of Danny Rand, Netflix announced the Cancellation of Luke Cage.
Netflix and Marvel made a sober announcement in a joint statement Friday night.
"Unfortunately, Marvel Luke Cage will not be coming back for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the showrunner, writers, performers and the team who brought Harlem's hero to life over the past two seasons, as well as to all the fans who supported the series . "
Netflix's Marvel TV series have never benefited from the frenetic attention around the world caused by Marvel Studios' films, but Luke Cage still had a huge cultural impact. The beat of the Harlem hero Black Panther being the first major title of black superhero in the modern era, and which rightly got people excited. Indeed, when Luke CageThe first season of Netflix touched so many fans that it was necessary to watch it so that the wave maybe crashed the site. "If you're the crime leader, then you're a crime leader." It was a bold decision for the series and an idea that fans would have been eager to explore further.
The editorial team had apparently been deeply ingrained in their work during the third season, but things quickly deteriorated when Netflix, Marvel and the show creators could not reach a compromise on their different visions of the new season. In the end, Netflix chose to delete everything, instead of trying to find a common ground.
However, it is likely that larger commercial considerations have also played a role in all of this. For a moment, Disney and Netflix had a lucrative agreement where the streaming giant would host much of the content of House of Mouse, including the main titles of Marvel and Star Wars. However, with Disney's decision to participate in the streaming contest with their next Disney Play service, both companies are about to be the competitors. For this reason, it makes sense that both are struggling to cut ties.

But maybe there is still hope for Luke. The official statement of Iron fistThe cancellation implies that the immortal hero continues to live. That might have meant that he would live with fans, but some have realized that Danny Rand might continue his adventures on Disney Play. If that is the case, there would be no reason for Luke not to join either. The other possibility is that all this frees the titular protagonists to unite and finally present the show Heroes for Hire that people have been missing for quite some time already.
Anyway, it's a strange time for Marvel TV fans. From now on, DaredevilThe third season is live (the same day as Luke CageCancellation), and both Jessica Jones and The punisher have the green light to continue. But with two cancellations so close to each other and Disney 's rivalry with Netflix, we should not really feel safe.
