This news is spectacular, spectacular! Moulin Rouge !: The musical is officially headed to Broadway.
Producers announced Monday that the musical based on the much-loved 2001 film Baz Luhrmann with the same name will be on Broadway in the summer of 2019. It will begin previews at Broadway's Al Hirschfield Theater on August 28. June, with the official opening on July 25. .
The show was premiered at the Emerson Colonial Theater, recently reopened in Boston last summer. the New York Times called production "intelligent, shameless and extravagant entertaining" while Variety The Boston group will resume its role in Broadway production, including Aaron Tveit as Christian, Karen Olivo as Satine, and Danny Burstein as Harold Zidler.
"We are delighted to bring Red Mill! The musical on Broadway, "said producer Carmen Pavlovic. "We are especially delighted that the show goes to Hirschfeld – the ideal theater for this production with sumptuous architecture and the rich history of iconic Broadway shows."
The musical follows Christian, a young poet in the making, who falls in love with one of the Moulin Rouge's courtesans, Satine, as the disco fights to survive Paris in the 19th century. The score is a riot of pop songs from the last 50 years, mixed in a unique rotation of beloved melodies from the film and new songs adapted to theatrical production.
In the screen version, Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman are the damned lovers.
Red Mill! The musical was written by John Logan (red) and is directed by Alex Timbers (Peter and the starcatcher) with a choreography by Sonya Tayeh.
A special pre-sale for fans will begin on November 21st and the show will be on Broadway next July. It's so exciting, but will it last 50 years?
