Public health officials said that four cases of a rare mysterious disease that could cripple children had been confirmed in Ohio amid a leap forward in such cases in the US. national scale.
The Ohio Department of Health announced Friday that it had urged health care providers to be vigilant and report suspected cases of this neurological condition called acute flaccid myelitis. It is characterized by a sudden, asymmetrical weakness of the arms or legs. The cause is unknown.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed 62 cases in 22 states this year, up from 33 last year, and are studying dozens more cases. Most cases confirmed nationwide, including those in Ohio, involve children.
Cases reported in Ohio occurred in the counties of Columbiana, Cuyahoga, Mercer and Pickaway in August and September.
