4 things learned at TCA: Day 4 – Variety

Starz, Amazon and AMC braved the TCA summer press tour on Saturday

Charles Donalson III of the "America to Me" docu-magazine held the journalists gathered in passionate attention with a passionate speech, while the head Amazon's Jennifer Salke Studios touted the diversity of the company.

Here are 4 things we learned from Saturday's session.

1. Charles Donalson III, one of the subjects in Starz's "America to Me" documentation, did not hold back when he spoke to TCA participants about the real issues affecting minorities in America during the "America to Me" panel and the other Starz docuettes, "Warriors of the City of Freedom."

"I want each of you kind of both documentaries not that they are stories of black power or black struggle," Donalson said. "It's great, we've seen that, but start giving us stuff where we will not have to fight."

"Do not just say you're worried," he continued. "Act as if you care, do not write about the show, write about the problems the show is dealing with, the struggles that made the show possible."

2. During Jennifer Salke's first TCA session since joining the tech giant last February, one of the interviewees likened the stage image to Amazon, co-directed by Albert Cheng, of D & ## s 39, Asian origin, and Vernon Sanders, originally from Africa. American – at "The Mod Squad". The comment came from a white press member, man, and could have done for an embarrassing moment. But Salke instead used it as an opportunity to tout the diversity of his team. "I came from NBCUniversal with Vernon, where 10 of my direct reports, seven of them were various, six of them were women," she said. "For me, it was just a part of how I surround creative people and different types of voices and the most intelligent people, frankly."

3. What is the size of Julia Roberts' television? "My TV is really big," joked Roberts when asked to make her first TV series, and why she made the jump to "the little screen." Roberts was on site for "Homecoming," Sam Esmail's new Amazon series. Roberts, as expected, charmed the CAW crowd – at one point falsely correcting a questioner on the plot of "My Best Wedding Friend."

4. Bob Odenkirk proved his commitment to "Better Call Saul" when he made an unexpected appearance at the beginning of the AMC part of the day. Odenkirk shocked the room when he dropped his pants, revealing a (hopefully temporary) tattoo on his pale backside with the show's title and the premiere date of season 4.
