INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – It began more than 40 years ago. Reverend Mozel Sanders saw a need and did something about it. Today, more than 2,000 Hoosiers shared his vision for the benefit of thousands of others.
The numbers are humiliating. 15,000 pounds of turkey. 80,000 rolls. 4,000 cans of green beans.
"We have enough food to serve 40,000 people.That's a lot of turkey," said volunteer chef Cullen Simpson.
The sad reality is that there is such a need. The blessing is that there are so many good people who want to do something about it.
"You are going to have packaged meals and put them in boxes," volunteer Kenny Davis told his colleagues. 2,000 of them volunteered for this day.
Davis has been volunteering for 23 years.
"It makes my dinner better at the end of the day," he said.
Simpson has been answering the call for over 30 years. It started with a plan for him to complete for a single year.
"That's what I've been asked to do, but then I woke up and I've been doing it for over thirty years."
They are not the only ones to get their hands on this chain of hope. More than a few young people also integrate, each in their own way.
"Everyone deserves to celebrate Thanksgiving and some people do not have food, so we try to help people," suggested a young volunteer.
Meals are packaged and shipped, mainly to churches in the area that have opened.
And more volunteers offering to deliver them.
