KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The San Francisco 49ers fear that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has torn ACL's left knee Sunday, said coach Kyle Shanahan after the 38-27 loss of his team's face to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Garoppolo, 26, will have an MRI on Monday to confirm the extent of the injury, but the initial prognosis within the team is not positive.
About five and a half minutes from the end, Garoppolo rushed to the left touchline in hopes of extending the return of the Niners to the fourth quarter.
After gaining 13 yards, Garoppolo had the choice between going out of bounds or staying and hitting a defender. He took a clumsy step with his left foot near the sideline, then hit Chief Steven Nelson's corner-half at Kansas City's 7-yard line.
Garoppolo collapsed to the ground, where he immediately received medical care. Garoppolo was finally able to move to the sideline, where he sat on the bench and fingered his left knee when the Niners medical team surrounded him. He then entered the blue medical tent as C.J. Beathard replaced him.
Shortly after, Garoppolo left the game on a cart and did not return. He was officially ruled out for the rest of the match with about two and a half minutes to go, and the Chiefs completed their victory.
Before the injury, Garoppolo was 20-over-30 for 251 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a score of 114.7.
Garoppolo was not the only star Niners to leave with an injury. Cornerback Richard Sherman was injured in the calf in the second quarter, which not only prevented him from staying for the remainder of the match, but he also asked a Niners staff member to Help get to the locker room at half-time.
Before leaving, Sherman had two tackles and broke a deep pass that Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes slightly missed for catcher Tyreek Hill.
Sherman was playing his third regular season game after recovering from a tear injury at Achilles last November. He also underwent surgery to remove the bony spurs from his left ankle during the off season and missed training on Thursday with what the Niners called a heel injury.
