SANTA CLARA – Second-year linebacker Reuben Foster was around his teammates during the first two weeks of the regular season, but Monday made a fresh start for him.
After serving a two-game suspension for violating NFL policies on abusive substances and personal conduct, Foster was able to participate in all of the team's activities when he returned to work on Monday.
"It's like a holiday, knowing that I can come back and play the game I love," Foster said Thursday. "So I'm just happy to play the right cards and do well on the field and in the field, and do nothing on the field, so I will not be out of the field."
Foster, a first round pick of the 49ers in 2017, admitted at the training camp that he feared his career would be over when he faced an allegation of domestic violence. He was acquitted of these charges, but served a suspension of the NFL resulting from marijuana charges and weapons.
During his suspension, Foster was able to attend all meetings, but was not allowed to attend games, to participate in training, to train or to participate in team lifting sessions.
Brock Coyle and Elijah Lee started the first two games at the weak linebacker, instead of Foster. Upon his return, he should provide the 49ers with an indispensable playmaker in defense.

Foster also seems to like his new role in defense. Rookie Fred Warner carries the green dot on his helmet, signifying the responsibility of relaying the radio call from the sideline to his 10 teammates in the group.
Because he no longer has this duty in defense, Foster says he allows him to play football with a clear mind and "put on the tail".
Warner, who will remain the starter in the middle of the 49ers' defense, seems out of this leading role, Foster said.
"I saw a real dog at Fred's, a real mature man who takes care of his business," Foster said. "And I really greet him for that. I'm proud of him for taking control of the defense, wearing the green sticker. I've worn the green sticker and it's hard to wear the green sticker, so I'm really proud of it.
