An Alabama father, arrested after his son drowned in the bathtub, says he left the room to play video games and forgot that the baby was there, the authorities said.

The five-month-old boy was not breathing when Jefferson County Sheriff's Office members responded to a call to Tarrant, Alabama, on Sunday night, the sheriff's office said.

The paramedics took the baby to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff's office said.

The baby's father, 23-year-old Cordarius Cotton, told the investigators that he had put the water in the water and put the baby in the tub, then left the room to play to a video game, said the sheriff's office.

Cotton told the detectives that he had forgotten the baby and "when he came back to the tub about an hour later, he found that the child was not reacting," said the office sheriff. The detectives believe in the allegation of Cotton, Sgt. Jake Self told ABC News.

Cotton was arrested and charged with manslaughter.

The baby's mother was not home at that time, says Self. Two other children live at home and one was present at the time of the incident, said Self.

The two children were entrusted to a grandmother while waiting for an investigation, he said.

It was not immediately clear whether Cotton had pleaded or had a lawyer.
