Two women and three children were found dead in a house in Australia on Sunday after a man went to the police and provided information leading to the terrible find, officials said.

The bodies were found in a house in Perth, Western Australia, after a man in his twenties visited the regional police station, reported 9News. It is not known how long the bodies remained in the house before the arrival of the police.

"This is a tragic event and this will undoubtedly have an impact not only on the family and friends of the deceased, but on the entire community and on the first responders who must attend a scene of deceased persons ". Assistant Police Commissioner Paul Steel said.

The man reportedly provided information that would have led the police to the bodies, according to WAtoday.

A forensic team will investigate the scene. Mr. Steel said the investigation was at a very early stage, but added that there was no permanent threat to the community. No further information was provided on the victims and the man in detention.

The neighbors said that they often saw children playing in the front yard of the house.

"It's really sad that something like this can happen in such a quiet neighborhood, it's horrible at all levels … poor children," said Maria Manfredini, a resident of the area , at 9News.

The incident marks the third tragic event in recent months in Western Australia.

A mother and her two young children were murdered in July in the Perth suburb of Ellenbrook.

In May, a man shot his six parents, including his four grandchildren, before turning against him on his Osmington property. The incident has been described as the worst mass shot in Australia since 1996.
