Before the Bears quarterback, Mitch Trubisky, burned the Buccaneers 354 yards and six touchdowns on Sept. 30, he made the decision to slip a sleeve on his right forearm. It was the first time in Trubisky's NFL career that he accompanied this accessory. And Wednesday afternoon at Halas Hall, the quarterback finally explained why.
"I had a small cut to the arm a few weeks ago," Trubisky said. "And then, it reopened in Arizona from the first drive and sprung from everywhere. I did not want this to happen (again) so I hid it. "
With the cup covered, Trubisky exploded for a career day in a 48-10 outburst of the Buccaneers and has since made the decision of the executive to keep the inning.
"A little superstition," said Trubisky. "Call it what you want, I've also had a lot of threats that I had to wear (again), so …"
The Bears will wear orange jerseys Sunday in Miami and it would not be surprising that Trubisky changes the colors of his sleeve. It does not matter, it stays.
"It feels good," said Trubisky. "It gives me a little more loot or something else. So, go out and do what you want with the sleeve. "
Here are four more things we learned about Trubisky on Wednesday …
1. Matt Nagy does not have to worry about Trubisky's eruption against Buccaneers leading to a surge of trust or complacency.
Even as the Bears' Bucs explosion unfolded, Nagy appreciated Trubisky's approach and his interactions with quarterback coach Dave Ragone and offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich.
"He did not care what his numbers were," said Nagy. "He wanted more – keep feeding me more. More more more. So he will not change because he had a good game. He will try to continue to make it a coherent process. "
2. Trubisky remembers using his legs as a weapon when the situation requires it.
The Bears quarterback has 117 rushing yards this season, and 53 in the last game with two block races – a rush for 26 yards and a run for 23.
"I will always try to be an aggressive runner," Trubisky said. "And the coach (Nagy) focuses on taking good care of football and taking care of himself. Do not take unnecessary shots and get off. But I will continue to be aggressive. … This is definitely something that I can use as part of my skills and that I will continue to use in the future. I think the defense has only one more option to consider, and that helped us. "
3. The Bears 3-1 start and position at the top of NFC North created a positive atmosphere at Halas Hall.
"It's a whole new feeling, different," acknowledged Trubisky. "And for those of us who were here last year – especially for myself – it's so much better to enter the building, to be excited about the work, to practice with these guys. Even in the movie theater and meetings, everyone is even more trapped. "
4. Nagy persuades Trubisky to stay aggressive.
Of all the positives of the quarterback's Week 5 attack, the will to shoot on the pitch was notable. Trubisky hit forward Trey Burton for a 39-yard touchdown at the opening of the game, before playing another seven passes of at least 20 yards. Nagy could not have been happier.
"I'm going back to the training camp," said Nagy. "We did not care about the number of picks he started. Then we learn who you can throw it at deep and who will hit the ball (if necessary) and let it go. … we have this mentality of touching hands down. And so, he learns to use this touchdown mentality in the countdown. He has that in him and he is learning to do it our way. "
