A magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit Wednesday four miles from Atsuma, in Hokkaido, Japan, confirmed the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake struck 33.4 kilometers deep, southeast of Sapporo, the regional capital.
It was not immediately clear whether there was significant damage or injury as a result.
A magnitude 7 earthquake is characterized by a major earthquake, sudden and severe, occurring every 50 years in a population.
