Food supplier JBS Tolleson, Inc. has issued a recall of 6.9 million pounds of beef likely to be contaminated with Salmonella Newport. The recall is being conducted in conjunction with the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Ground beef wrapped between July 26 and September 7 is among the raw beef products targeted. The affected beef bears the EST establishment number. 267 in the USDA inspection mark. According to the CDC, since its initial investigation in October, an additional 126 people have been infected with Salmonella Newport following contamination with contaminated beef. According to the CDC, persons infected with Salmonella may experience symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after consuming the recalled beef. The symptoms can last from four to seven days and most people recover from their illness without medical treatment.
Some people may need to be hospitalized if symptoms persist, including older adults, infants or people with weakened immune systems. The CDC recommends contacting a health professional if the illness becomes serious.
FSIS advises all consumers to take precautions when preparing raw meat products. Ground beef should be cooked at 160 ° F while other pieces of beef should be baked at 145 ° F and allowed to stand for three full minutes.
