WASHINGTON – A 53-year-old woman in Singapore recently underwent surgery to remove a 61-pound fibroid after struggling to walk and breathe.

Live Science reported that the largest fibroid – a tumor that grows in the uterus – had to be taken from a living person and weighed about 100 pounds.

Although not quite record, this tumor was still classified as "giant" by weight standards. The case report published in BMJ on the tumor and its elimination called fibroids of this size "extremely rare".

Live Science reported that the fibroid was about 26 inches in diameter at its widest point and that it occupied the entire abdominal cavity of the woman.

It has probably taken five years for the tumor to reach this size and its slow growth has allowed the body to adjust as it grows.

Dr. Poh Ting Lim, resident of OB-GYN at the KK Women's and Children's Hospital in Singapore, said the woman may have been slow to see a doctor because she was afraid of the surgery.

To remove it, the doctors had to perform a total hysterectomy and reconstruct the woman's abdomen with plastic surgery.
