A 63-year-old woman died after a family fight in Methuen late Sunday, the Essex District Attorney's Office announced, and a 23-year-old family member was charged with assault.
The Methuen police responded to Bicknell Ave. Sunday night for reports of a fight and a woman who did not react, according to a statement from the prosecutor's office. Martina Gomez reportedly attempted to end a fight between family members while she "appeared to be suffering from health problems" and that family members had called 911, officials said in a statement.
Modesta Gomez has been charged with assault and battery on a person over 60 and assault and battery, the statement said. It must be brought before the Lawrence District Court on Monday.
The case remains under investigation and an autopsy is scheduled Monday to determine the cause and modalities of the death of Martina Gomez, officials said.
