HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) –

A powerful earthquake hit Fiji on Thursday morning, but there is no tsunami threat in Hawaii, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The earthquake initially measured at a magnitude of 8.1, but was subsequently downgraded to 7.8.

The US Geological Survey reported that the US Geological Survey struck near Suva, Fiji at approximately 5:50 pm Hawaii time.

PTWC officials said the earthquake was too deep – about 400 miles – to generate a tsunami.

Another earthquake, which appeared to be a replica, hit the same area about an hour later. It measured a magnitude of 5.5, said the USGS.

Officials add that they do not plan a tsunami for Fiji, but they are watching closely.

It is not known if there were any injuries or damage as a result of the earthquake.
