A police officer in Florence, South Carolina, died Wednesday in a shootout that injured six other law enforcement officers and ended on a suspect in custody.
Four police officers from Florence were injured in the shooting, including the killed officer, authorities said at a press conference Wednesday night, calling the incident a "terrible situation." Three deputies from the Florence County Sheriff's Office were also among the wounded.
"These officers are my family," Florence police chief Allen Heidler told the news conference. "Pray for the family who lost the bravest policeman I've known."
The authorities have not yet published additional information on the situation of other law enforcement officials.
"The city of Florence … is crying tonight the loss of one of ours and we pray for those who are injured and still in danger," said the Mayor of Florence, Stephen Wukela, at the conference of press. "We can be somewhat reassured to know that the officer who has passed and the wounded are doing what they love – protecting this community and protecting each other."
The gunsling suspect has been arrested but has not yet been publicly identified.
"The active shooting situation is over and the suspect is in custody," Florence County Emergency Management Tweets just after 18h Wednesday. "We are asking everyone to stay away from Vintage Place as a criminal investigation is still going on."
President Trump shared his "thoughts and prayers" in a tweet on Wednesday night.
"My thoughts and prayers are going to the Florence County Sheriff's Office and the Florence Police Department tonight in South Carolina," President Trump tweeted Wednesday evening. "We are always grateful for what our law enforcement officers do 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year."
South Carolina leaders also expressed their condolences and prayers about the murder, calling the incident "a devastating news."
