Alabama is one of seven states where the adult obesity rate is 35% or higher, according to a new study.
The situation of obesity in 2018, published by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, indicates that 48 countries have obesity rates above 25%. At least 20% of adults are obese in all states, says the report.
In Alabama, the obesity rate is 36.3%. The other six states where obesity rates reach 35% are:
West Virginia – 38.1%
Mississippi – 37.3%
Oklahoma – 36.5%
Iowa – 36.4%
Louisiana – 36.2%
Arkansas – 35%
This year is the first time Oklahoma and Iowa have obesity rates above 35%; Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, West Virginia and Alabama also posted rates above 35% last year.
Only two states – Hawaii and Colorado – and the District of Columbia had adult obesity rates below 25% in 2017.
