It's time to review our weekly reports on the Washington Redskins, as well as some great reflections one day after the 16-3 win on the road Sunday in Tampa Bay.
♦ The Redskins did not boldly acquire Ha Ha Clinton-Ten security before the recent NFL negotiations, which allowed them to stand out in their No. 20 jersey. Packer at 71% defensive catch against the Falcons in his early days a few days after the deal, Clinton-Dix joined his teammate DJ Swearinger on the field for the 69 defensive attempts against the Buccaneers.
Clinton-Dix finished third in eight (8) against Tampa Bay. The free security accumulated by many tackles is of course not ideal for the defense. He recovered a fumble and was credited with only one defended pass.
♦ Jonathan Allen (43), Daron Payne (42) and Matt Ioannidis (43) all played a little less than normal. Tell the coaching staff to keep players cool in hot conditions. Tim Settle (11) has only received five shots in the previous four games. Stacy McGee (11) made her debut in the season after the Redskins activated her from the PUP list this week.
♦ Cassanova McKinzy did not only make his defensive debut for the Redskins. The external linebacker:
- Played more defensive catches (24) than Ryan Anderson's second round pick of 2017 (22)
- Was the match day alive with veteran Pernell McPhee
- Played at the end of the fourth quarter with the result of the match still in the balance
This is quite extraordinary for the 25-year-old untrained free agent who has gone from the practice team to the roster of 53 players several times this season. That the Redskins turned off McPhee automatically sent a signal something was up given the limited depth of linebacker outside.
McKinzy finished with an official tackle, essentially falling on Ryan Fitzpatrick while the Tampa Bay quarterback amassed a fumble. The biggest piece of the old Auburn Tiger, a backpack and a fumble recovered inside the 20-meter Washington line, was canceled by a penalty from Josh Norman.
Anderson was not officially credited with a tackle or a forced fumble, although he clearly pushed the ball away from Bucs running Jacquizz Rodgers. Clinton-Dix recovered the ball in the end zone for one of the four turnovers of the defense.
McPhee, who was added during the free-attack free-season as a quick-start aid, did not offer any bag in eight games. His playing time ranged from 18 to 24% of defensive catches this season.
♦ Ryan Kerrigan (64%) and Preston Smith (70) both recorded their lowest percentage of shots this season. Again, we will assume that this usage is a nod to the heat rejected by Mother Nature.
♦ Whatever Zach Brown's blame was felt by the coaching staff, it was not reflected in his play time; the 75% of snapshots taken with the previous weekly amounts.
♦ Broad receiver: Josh Doctson (45), Maurice Harris (38), Michael Floyd (31), Brian Quick (21). In percentage, Doctson and Harris played in part because the three tight ends each played 45% of the shots in the same game for the first time this season. The need to block more points in the light of offensive line problems probably contributed to more work for Floyd.
♦ Danny Johnson (18) played early in place of inactive Quinton Dunbar, but eventually rookie cornerback Greg Stroman (39) more than doubled his total. Both players were credited with a defended pass, but Stroman added an interception and a forced fumble. Either the rookie will be challenged in the 11th week against the Texans receiver duo consisting of DeAndre Hopkins and Demaryius Thomas if Dunbar sits again.
♦ Random Statistics for the win: Alex Smith finished with EXACTLY 178 passing yards for the third time in four games. Just as incredible considering the NFL's fouls in 2018, the Redskins are 3-0 in these games. They lost to Atlanta in the 9th week when Smith finished with 306 yards as Washington caught up.
Props to the Redskins for Sunday's win. The leaders of NFC East, now 6-3 and 2-0 in the division, have a two-game lead over the 4-5 Cowboys and Eagles. Winning just three of their last seven games could be enough to win the division. You can not win the Super Bowl without participating in the playoffs. So let's not neglect the potential for success, especially after zero serial appearance since 2015.
There is a difference between qualifying for the playoffs and really competing. It's hard to project Washington as a real competitor based on recent performance and current injuries.
The defense, which allowed 501 yards for only three points in Tampa Bay, made the best version of the turn but did not break the history of the NFL. Seriously, it's not a joke.
Since the merger with the NFL, there have been 864 cases of teams totaling more than 475 yards. Yesterday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers scored the lowest points in these games.
On average, teams with more than 475 yards total 36 (!) Points.

The Redskins forced the Buccaneers to adopt a methodical offensive mode. The more games there are, the more chances of error. Fitzpatrick and his team have done a lot while the Washington defenders have always stood firm in the red zone. This is probably not enough most weeks against more regular offenses. Let's not forget that Atlanta scored 38 points and 491 yards in the ninth week. Among the leaders in the number of yards allowed per game for most of the season, the Redskins are now ranked 17th (361.0).
However, the concern exists on the other side. Washington could barely score or move the ball in the air against Tampa's 30th-ranked defense. The Redskins are now ranked 26th in offense (19.6) and yards per game (337.4).
The Redskins are obviously shorthanded. We'll see when Trent Williams, Jamison Crowder and Chris Thompson come back.
The NFL is ruthless. The other teams are also missing integral components. The key is adjusting. The Redskins did a good job against the Buccaneers. The same will probably not be enough for two wins over the next three weeks against Houston, Dallas in Thanksgiving and Philadelphia.
This is short term. If we talk bigger, it is difficult to project Washington as a real competitor under the current conditions. Again, who had 6-3 after nine games despite everything.
