MAYWOOD, Calif. – Thousands of dollars have been paid to support a California high school music teacher arrested Friday after a classroom fight between him and a student, officials said.
Marston Riley, 64, suspected of being abused and causing serious bodily injury to a child after the fight at Maywood Academy High School on Pine Avenue, Marston Riley was reported to authorities around 1:30 pm, said Joana, deputy sheriff of Los Angeles County. Warren, Ministry Information Officer.
Inspectors from the agency's Special Victim Services Office are currently investigating the case, Warren said. The crisis counselors and security enhancement welcomed the students to a school in Maywood on Monday.
Riley, who was released after posting a $ 50,000 bail Saturday, reported a video posted on a GoFundMe page aimed at raising funds for his legal fees. In the video, Riley thanks the people who help him, as well as Cecilia Diaz Jimenez, the woman who organized the fundraiser. Jimenez says that she worked at Maywood for four years. On Monday afternoon, supporters had already donated more than $ 40,000 from the $ 50,000 goal.
The students said the confrontation began after Riley asked the young man to leave the classroom because he was not wearing the proper uniform.
The student reportedly refused, and a video on a mobile phone captured by another student shows him defying the instructor, using blasphemy and repeatedly casting a racial slur on Riley, who is black.
The situation worsens further after the student throws a basketball at Riley, who is then seen taking out his mobile phone to ask for reinforcements.
The student continues to insult and provoke Riley. The teacher stays calm for a moment, then strikes the boy in the face, quickly and without warning.
The fight that ensues lasts about 30 seconds. The pair climbs across the room as Riley strikes repeatedly and the others scream in the classroom. The boy is only able to give about a punch.
The video shows that Riley aggressively pursued the student even after other school officials reacted to end the battle.
The film ends when campus staff pulls the student out of the room.
On Monday, officials at the Los Angeles Unified School District issued a statement claiming to be "extremely disturbed" by the video.
"We take this case very seriously and do not tolerate any violence or intolerance of any kind," the statement said. "Los Angeles Unified is cooperating with law enforcement to investigate this incident, and crisis counselors and additional school police patrols will be going to school today and all at the same time. this week to support our students and staff. "
The parents were shocked by the altercation.
"They are both at fault. The teacher should have called the school police, and he should have let him do it, but the pupil also has a fault too because he" s wrong. he was provoking it, "one parent told KTLA.
The students who spoke with KTLA on Friday night were all sympathetic to Riley, claiming that the fellow involved had pushed him to the edge of the abyss.
Several students spoke with KTLA on Friday night under the guise of anonymity.
One of them alleged that the situation was an installation.
"Everything was planned," he said. "There were students who were already going out their phones to record the incident.I do not think it's quite right that they're accusing (Riley) of blaming everything (Riley), so that personally I know that he is a good man. "
Another defended the character of the music instructor.
"I had this teacher before and I had no problem with it," said this student. "He was a very good teacher, I always respected him, he always had a very good relationship with all the students."
Riley is scheduled to appear in court at the end of November.
