Duncan Hines cake mix recalled due to possible Salmonella contamination

MILWAUKEE – Four varieties of Duncan Hines cake mixes were recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration, Salmonellae were found in a sample of Duncan Hines Classic White retail cakes prepared at retail, which could be linked to a Salmonella outbreak being investigated.

Although it is not definitively concluded that this product is related to the outbreak and that the investigation is still ongoing, Conagra has decided to voluntarily recall the identified Duncan Hines specific variety as well as three other varieties as a precaution.

As part of this investigation, the Centers for Disease Control and the FDA are investigating five cases of salmonella disease.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious or life-threatening infections in young children, frail and elderly people, and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy salmonella-infected people often have fever, diarrhea (which can be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, a salmonella infection can cause the body to enter the bloodstream and cause more serious diseases such as arterial infections (infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Several people reported eating a cake mix before getting sick, and some may have eaten raw and uncooked products as well.

Consumers are reminded do not consume raw dough. Cake mixes and batter may be prepared with ingredients such as eggs or flour, which may carry a risk of bacteria made harmless by baking, frying or boiling.

Consumers are reminded to thoroughly wash their hands, work surfaces and utensils after contact with raw dough products, to follow cooking instructions and never to eat raw dough.
