The Republican party "hopes that racist alarmist remarks will distract you while they steal you."

This is how David Letterman ended the very first episode of Late Night With David Letterman, back on February 1, 1982:

Here is Mr. Steve Fessler, a guy from Brooklyn who has, for some reason, memorized all the dialogues of the classic two and a half hour B-movie. Bowery at midnight, with Bela Lugosi. So now, for those of you who would really rather watch old movies at this time of night – I know I would like – please welcome Steve Fessler.

Then Fessler came out and recited Bowery at midnight until the credits roll. Here's how Seth Meyers completed his "Closer Look" segment on Late at night with seth meyer Monday, November 5, 2018:

This election has clearly shown what the modern GOP has become: a party that openly trades racism and sells war rhetoric to its constituents while enriching itself at the expense of taxpayers. They hope that racist fear will distract you as they steal you. And they hope you do not care if the president is crazy.

Different moments! Meyers summarizes the president's electoral message on white supremacy while criticizing his own network, NBC, for helping to disseminate it:

But beyond noting all that television has changed over the past 36 years, Letterman has criticized the company's parent company for its fruit basket delivery policy, and not for its "taking of Money by the president to broadcast shocking racist commercials during the last days of a mid-term campaign. " -It remains remarkable and commendable that Meyers take the current moment seriously and act accordingly. Letterman's parent company had a fruit basket delivery policy; NBC's policy is to "take money from the president to broadcast shocking and racist ads during the last days of a mid-term campaign." (Meyers also occupies a niche that the Democratic Party has abandoned, imagine Pelosi or Schumer saying something as direct and precise as "They hope racist terror will distract you while they steal you.") Immediate existential threat caused by the lies and racial hatred of one party, we should all requisition all the microphones on which we can get our hands. the second it's done, however, Late at night should commit to depositing bowling balls on very high heights on used cars, at least for a few weeks. We could all use it.
