Angie Walker, 41, was killed and two others were injured in Christiana, Tennesee, about 35 miles southeast of Nashville, where said tornado destroyed several homes, authorities said.
The National Weather Service gave the tornado a preliminary EF2 rating, with an estimated wind speed of 135 mph.
To the southeast in Franklin County, Tennessee, two homes were early Tuesday morning near Estill Springs, about 50 miles west-northwest of Chattanooga. A fire truck was blown off the road attempting to respond to the damage.
Numerous trees were reported on the west side of Knoxville early Tuesday. A wind gust to 55mph has been measured at Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Airport just before 5am and has the squall line swept through. Widespread tree damage was reported from Knoxville.
Two horses will be euthanized after a barn collapsed in Estill Springs. Three other horses trapped in the barn were unharmed.
More than 28,000 Tennessee homes and business remained without power Tuesday morning, according to poweroutage.us.
In Scottsboro, Alabama, in the far northeast corner of the state, tornado damaged outbuildings and barns.
In Tupelo, MIssissippi, downed power lines and trees. A semi overturned on Interstate 22 after possible tornado.
Also Monday night in Louisiana, at least one tornado was spotted in Natchitoches Parish, where damage was reported by Natchez and Natchitoches.
The Storm Prediction Center said at least two homes were damaged in the parish due to a tornado. No injuries were reported.

Based on debris signatures and radar-indicated tornadic signatures, Jon Erdman, senior meteorologist for weather.com, estimates there were at least 11 tornadoes in four states.
Two EF1 tornadoes are confirmed in Louisiana by the National Weather Service.
The weather agency can conduct damage surveys Tuesday and possibly Wednesday to determine the paths and intensities of other possible tornadoes.
