Everything continues to grow in Texas, including its citizens. A new Wallethub analysis ranked Texas as one of the 20 largest states in the country. The analysis, released Tuesday, compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia on three dimensions; obesity and overweight, health consequences, diet and physical fitness.
These dimensions were assessed using 25 parameters, which included the share of overweight adults, adults consuming less than one serving of fruit / vegetables per day, and fast food restaurants per capita. The raw data were collected from the US Census Bureau, the Child and Adolescent Health Initiative and the National Conference of State Legislatures and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among others.
"According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than seven out of ten adults aged 20 and over in the United States are overweight or obese." Wallethub said. "The problem of obesity in America is so prevalent that the weight loss industry continues to grow.In 2017, the US market for weight loss and diet control was assessed at 66 billion dollars. The United States spends nearly 200 billion dollars in annual health care costs related to obesity ".
Texas also ranked second for the highest percentage of obese children in the country, behind the Mississippi, which was the largest state in the world.
