The Detroit Lions sign their receiver Bruce Ellington and give up half-strike Ameer Abdullah, according to a report released Tuesday by the NFL Network. Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport noted that Detroit had been exploring the Abdullah trading market before last week's NFL trading deadline, but no deal has been reached.
A second-round pick in 2015, Abdullah turned heads with 597 yards rushing, 183 receiving yards and three touchdowns in his rookie season. However, he was unable to take advantage of this performance as he had only two games because of a foot injury in 2016.
The back 5 "9", 203 lbs was able to bounce back a season ago, however, running for 552 yards, catching 162 yards and finding five times the top of the final zone.
Unfortunately for him, all this dynamic has stopped abruptly this year.
The arrivals of rookie LeGarrette Blount and the second-round pick, Kerryon Johnson, pushed Abdullah into the depth standings. Although it may discourage some players, Abdullah remained determined to try to prove his value to Lions coaches.
"I'm definitely not in the position I want to be at the moment, but as I said, what I'm going to do for me," Abdullah said at the end of September. Justin Rogers of Detroit News. "I always come here every day and I do everything I can to do what I can when my number is called."
His number has barely been called this season. The fourth-year professional played only three games in the first nine weeks, scoring one yard in a rushed effort and two passes for 18 yards.
In the end, the Lions decided that it was time to move on.
Ellington spent the first two years of his career with the San Francisco 49ers after their elimination in the fourth round in 2014. The coach of 5 "9", 195 pounds joined the Houston Texans before the 2017 season He has played in three games this year, scoring eight catches for 92 yards and one touchdown before getting his hamstring injury.
Detroit's receiving corps was hit last week when the Lions traded veteran Golden Tate to the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday's deadline. Ellington will seek to fight his way through the Lions attack alongside Marvin Jones Jr., Kenny Golladay and Co.
