Two cases of measles have been confirmed among residents of Oakland County. They arrived at the Detroit Metro airport around 5 pm. October 23rd.
Officials from the Oakland County Health Division advise people who have come into contact with people infected with the virus to monitor their symptoms for 21 days after exposure. If symptoms occur, call in advance the health care counselor with whom you plan to go so that appropriate precautions can be taken to avoid exposure to other people.
Symptoms usually begin 7 to 14 days after exposure, but may appear until 21 days after exposure. They understand:
- High fever, up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red and watery eyes
- Small white spots on the inside of the cheeks, gums and roof of the mouth, 203 days after the onset of other symptoms
- Red, raised, spotted skin rash that usually begins on the face and spreads to the trunk, arms and legs 3-5 days after onset of symptoms.
Measles is a vaccine-preventable disease transmitted by direct person-to-person contact and by air by the infected person while sneezing or coughing. The virus can live up to two hours in the air where the person coughs or sneezes.
"Measles is a very contagious respiratory infection." said Leigh-Anne Stafford, health officer of Oakland County. "Vaccination is the best way to protect our families and communities from vaccine-preventable diseases, such as measles."
Dr. Russell Faust, Oakland County Medical Director, said anyone with questions about their immunization status or that of their child should consult their doctor immediately to make sure their family is protected.
The MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella, is available from select health care providers, pharmacies and offices of the Oakland County Health Division in Southfield and Pontiac. . Southfield's offices are located at South Oakland Health Center, 27725 Greenfield Road, and Pontiac, North Oakland Health Center, 1200 North Telegraph Road.
The vaccine is a two-dose series and costs $ 71 per dose. $ 7 per vaccination per client. The Health Division accepts Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare and Vaccines for Children (VFC), as well as cash and credits. VFC offers free vaccines for eligible children. There is an additional charge for credit card payments. No one will be denied access because of their inability to pay. There is a discounted / sliding fee schedule available.
