The most popular election day on Google in the United States on polling day was "dónde votar" (where to vote) at noon, with an increase of 3350% over the previous day. The popularity of the research suggests that more Hispanics are considering voting.
Simon Rogers, data publisher at Google News Lab, said the term was not very trendy in the 2016 election. The conditions on Google do not predict the election results, but it's a "powerful social indicator," he told HuffPost.
During a year in which the government targeted immigration as a key issue of the vote, civic engagement groups rallied to get the Hispanic vote.
Karina Martinez, director of communications for Mi Familia Vota, said that her organization has made considerable efforts this year to mobilize the Hispanic community mid-term. Throughout the year, in key states like Florida, Arizona and Colorado, the group held public meetings, broadcast nationwide on Univision. Mi Familia Vota has invested in national advertising and went door-to-door to help get the vote.
Martinez said that the organization had registered more than 84,000 voters.
"Much of this work is a reaction to what happened under the Trump presidency," she said. "It motivated us to go out and take out the vote."
