Netflix unveils six new animation projects as the broadcast giant continues to strengthen its family entertainment slate.
The offers cover film and television, and spring from the minds of some of the most acclaimed names in the media. Among the films are "My Father's Dragon," a 2D animated feature film by Oscar-nominated director Nora Twomey ("The Secret of Kells"), and "The Willoughbys," an adaptation from Lois Lowry's novel of the same name by author and director Kris Pearn ("Cloudy with a chance of giant dumplings 2"). "The Willoughbys" is already in production and includes a voice composed of Ricky Gervais, Maya Rudolph, Will Forte, Martin Short, Alessia Cara and Jane Krakowski. "My father's dragon" has a screenplay of Meg LeFauve from "Inside Out".
In terms of television, Netflix offers three unencrypted broadcasts. The streaming service has asked the creator of "The Powerpuff Girls", Craig McCracken, to make a new series about a young boy who is transformed into a powerful hero after meeting cosmic stones. McCracken said it was not your typical wish-making story Variety. The show will follow his protagonist as he struggles to exploit his new abilities.

"It's the story of how these powers are not up to his fantasies," said McCracken. Netflix will support a limited series of Jorge Gutierrez ("Book of Life") entitled "Maya and the Three". Although limited series have become more popular on the network and cable channels, it is rare to see the format applied to animated entertainment. In an interview with VarietyGutierrez said he wanted to make a show that looked like a "lord of the rings" Mexican, but hilarious. He added that the series boasts of a half-human and half-divine heroine, and said the project would draw heavily on Mesoamerican legends.
"I realized that too much mythology is sexist," Gutierrez said. "This is my attempt to provide a great, awesome woman and put her in this amazing quest."
At one point, Gutierrez had wanted to direct each episode of the series of nine episodes, but he would simply announce the plans on four series while co-writing the rest of the episodes.
The ads continue to advance Netflix in the original animated programming, an initiative undertaken by Disney before launching its own streaming service in 2019. Netflix applies a creator-driven approach to its catalog and asked the creative community for its better ideas. Melissa Cobb, a former executive of Dreamworks Animation, has been overseeing the efforts since she was hired to lead the Children's and Family Team in 2017.
"We are trying to take Netflix's philosophy of empowering creators and integrating them into the animation space," Cobb said. "We are not focused on creating a unique brand identity. We want to produce a wide range of content that appeals to children and families around the world. "
The studio has already announced several ambitious projects. Among them are "Pinocchio" in stop motion by Guillermo del Toro, as well as "Over the Moon", a fantastic film created by the director of "The Little Mermaid", Glen Keane.
