It did not outline the expected financial impact but said stockpiled iron ore reserves would not cover the entire period of interruption and would be linked with customers on contractual commitments over the period.
The train, consisting of four locomotives and 268 wagons filled with iron ore, was deliberately derailed by BHP's remote operations center on Monday. It had been traveling from Newman to Port Hedland when the driver got off to a siding to inspect an issue with an after car, before the train started moving again.
With no one on board, the train travelled 92 km in 50 minutes before being deliberately derailed near Turner siding, about 119 kilometers from Port Hedland.
The incident occurred in a mangled wreck among stacks of iron ore spanning more than 1.5 kilometers.

Video uploaded to social media showed 20 meters away from the track in nearby bushes.
No one was injured.

BHP said the decision was made with safety as the highest priority.
A spokeswoman said they could not speculate on the outcome of the investigation and they were working with authorities.
"Our focus remains on the safe recovery of our operations," she said.
BHP's WA iron ore sales rose 2 percent to 273 million tonnes in 2017-18 and its production guidance for 2018-19 is 273 to 283 million tonnes.
This equates to an average of 5.25 million tonnes exported every week.
