Victory in District 1 marks South Carolina's second Democratic seat, with the seven districts reporting.

This victory follows an already dramatic surprise in the Republican primary in a district that has become red since 1981.

Arrington, a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, has faced former outgoing representative Mark Sanford in the primaries. Asset struck down Sanford in June as "very useless" to his campaign and approved Arrington.

"We are the party of President Donald J. Trump," she said after her main victory.

The Democrats were not expecting to win the district and Republicans have expressed concern over the race in recent weeks. CNN polls predict the district would be meager Republican.

Cunningham will join Democratic Representative Jim Clyburn, currently the only Democrat in Congress, who was reelected by an overwhelming majority.
