The first year of Mayans M.C. left at sunset on Tuesday, but not before launching a major bomb and leaving a few victims in its path. Winner: Son of anarchy Fans
One of the joys of watching a show of a show that you like (d) is to see familiar faces and locate all references to it, and Mayans M.C. certainly not disappointed in this regard. In addition to the character of Alvarez, who would always be present in any show centered on a Mayan chart, the series also featured a brief cameo from Gemma (Katey Sagal) in the first, which quickly established a connection with the wider world of Son of anarchy. The following arrivals of Chucky (Michael Ornstein) in Episode 2, of Lincoln Potter (Ray McKinnon) in Episode 6 and, possibly, of Happy and Quinn (Rusty Coones) in the final of Season 1 meant the first season of Mayans M.C. was littered not only with references to the men and women of Son of anarchybut real people too. This show was always aimed at a specific audience, but it is clear now that it was actually made for them too.
Loser: Justice
The DEA officer, Kevin Jimenez (Maurice Compte), first lost his job, then his life when he was murdered by his own second cousins (EZ and Angel, obviously ) on Potter's orders. It would probably be a shocking development on literally any other show, but the law has always appeared on the losing side in the big Son of anarchy universe. Like his predecessor, Mayans M.C. is a show about outlaws, and we encourage these seemingly evil men to escape the cold hands of justice forever. And they have. Corruption is the name of the game here, so the law would always be losing in this one.
Vote for Mayans M.C. at the television popularity contest in the fall
Winner: EZ
This first season was not easy for EZ (hey), but he now knows who killed his mother, a mystery that has haunted him for years. Beyond that, however, he managed to get out of every tricky situation he was in this season. It's one of Sutter's favorite tricks – he loves to put his tracks in impossible situations and make them squirm a bit to keep them from getting away at the end of the day – but honestly, everything went smoothly so far. The hands of fate could possibly come claiming EZ, but since he and Angel have killed Kevin (and his former boss) for Potter, EZ's agreement with the DEA is complete and the registration of him as an informant has been deleted. Now, Potter is probably not going to just go away, and EZ has obviously killed another law enforcement officer, which can not be considered a victory, but his problems have been significantly reduced for now.

Loser: the Mayans / SAMCRO affair
Happy arrived on the scene during the season 1 finale, which was definitely a thrill for fans, but knowing that he had murdered EZ's mother, the current alliances between Mayans and SAMCRO, that took place under Jax (Charlie Hunnam), are on the ice. Alvarez said that he wanted to honor the promise he had made to Jax, but now that he has hung up and that he's working for Galindo, who must prevent EZ from taking his revenge and to threaten relations between the two clubs? (Or at least try to take revenge – this is Happy we are talking, after all.)
On the one hand, putting Happy on the line of sight is a sneaky and intelligent way to bridge the world Mayans M.C. with that of Son of anarchy. He teases a second season that could potentially see a war of Mayans and SAMCRO, echoing the beginning of Son of Anarchywhen both clubs were enemies. But on the other hand, co-creators Kurt Sutter and Elgin James have done a commendable job in ensuring that both series feel distinct and yet familiar, and as much fun as we draw from seeing the collision of these two worlds could threaten it.
Of course, there are still many things we do not know here. Did Happy work independently or execute the club's orders? If he had killed EZ's mother eight years ago, he might still have been a nomad and would not work for SAMCRO. Whatever the case may be, Happy's past actions may still have negative consequences for SAMCRO in the present, which compromises the current and future working relationships between the Mayas and the Sons of Anarchy.
Winner: Chucky
Has there ever been a tertiary character who survived as long as Chucky survived? Honestly, there's no real reason for Chucky to be part of Mayans M.C., and yet I am eternally grateful that he not only survived the bloodbath that has been the last two seasons of Son of anarchy, but that the Mayans won it at poker and he is now in Santo Padre. It's an almost constant reminder of where Mayans M.C. comes from, but his presence does not steal the concentration of men in his center.

Loser: the old regime
Galindo cleaned up the house in the penultimate episode of the season after discovering that Devante (Tony Plana) had nurtured lies about his brother. And in a brilliant gesture (for him), he let Adelita take care of business and kill Devante after revealing that he was the head of the execution brigade who had murdered his father, his mother and her younger brother many years ago. This decision not only strengthened their new working relationship, but also meant that his hands were clean and that Devante was irrelevant.
However, the old regime was not limited to his father's advisor. Galindo's mother, Dita, was on the lie – she had to support him, of course – and this put her relationship between her son and her family to the test, so that he probably would not listen to her anymore. . Meanwhile, Nestor (Gino Vento) is no longer on the ground and acts strictly as Galindo's security officer, who does not trust him to be as competent as necessary. Basically, there is a new regime in place now that Galindo and Adelita (Carla Baratta) are getting ready to work together to screw up the federal government.
Winner: Adelita
Speaking of Adelita, she is definitively winner of season 1 after having managed to avenge the men who murdered her family and infiltrated Galindo's operation. But perhaps more importantly, she and her little rabbits no longer live in tents and constantly move from place to place. They now have a house to call, even though not all children understand it. Plus, it looks like she's also Angel (Clayton Cardenas), you know, once he's stopped hating himself.
Clayton Cardenas, Mayans M.C.
Winner: FX
The biggest winner of Mayans M.C.The first season is definitely FX. Son of anarchy remains the highest rated program of the network in history, and Maya is a very successful fallout from this program. There was no guarantee that Son the fans were going to show up for Maya, but the four-year lag between the end of Son and the first of Mayans M.C. probably contributed to the long-term spin-off because it allowed some of the fans who had soured on SOA in the end, just like me, I remembered why they had enjoyed the drama of bikers (and being a pillar of Netflix did not hurt either).
Beyond being able to continue successfully the Son of anarchy universe, this show is also a win for FX because of what it means for its programming. Basically, FX needed the show to succeed because its most prolific creator, Ryan Murphy, had signed for Netflix earlier this year. The network still has at least two more seasons of American horror storybut History of American crime and Quarrel seem to be plagued by problems. The success of Mayans M.C. guarantees that FX has at least one successful series that can be counted on in the post-Murphy era.
Mayans M.C. will come back for a second season at a later date.
