Harley-Davidson introduced for the first time a concept electric motorcycle for four years. The bike ready for production, called Harley-Davidson LiveWire, has finally arrived. Well almost.
The company based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, unveiled Tuesday the electric motorcycle ready to be produced at the motorcycle show EICMA in Italy. It will only be available next year.
Harley is placing a big bet on electrification in the hope of reviving the brand, which has been struggling in recent years. LiveWire is supposed to be the first of what will be a portfolio of Harley-Davidson electric motorcycles that will be available by 2022.
To encourage switching to electricity, Harley will install Level 2 public chargers at dealerships selling e-bikes.
Harley did not broadcast price, track, and performance information on LiveWire. There were, however, some new details (and of course, some details) on the specifications of the bike.
The bike will be powered by a permanent magnet electric motor located in the lower part of the bike to lower the center of gravity, improve handling at different speeds and facilitate control at a standstill, the company said. The LiveWire will have two batteries: the main battery, consisting of lithium-ion cells surrounded by a cast-aluminum finned housing, and a small 12-volt lithium-ion battery that powers the lights, controls, horn and battery. display.
The bike can be loaded with a Level 1 charger that plugs in a standard household outlet with a power cord that fits under the seat of the motorcycle. For faster loading, it can also be loaded via Levels 2 and 3, or DC Fast Charge (DCFC), via an SAE J1772 connector in the US charging connector or CCS2 – IEC Type 2 in international markets.
LiveWire will have seven control modes, three of which are defined by the runner. The modes will be adjusted with a Showa adjustable suspension of high specification. The bike will also have an adjustable color touch screen located above the handlebars. The screen gives runners access to the interface for Bluetooth connectivity, navigation, music and other features.
The bike does not have that petrol brand name, so Harley gave it a tone that will increase in height and volume with speed. The company says the new sound "represents the fluid electric power of the LiveWire bike."
The bike is equipped with Brembo Monoblock front brake calipers gripping two discs of 300 mm diameter. It also has an anti-lock braking system and a traction control system, which will be delivered as standard.
The company said it would disclose more product information on LiveWire, as well as details on the pre-ordering process, in January 2019.
