Dez Bryant would have signed with the Saints of New Orleans – thanks to the New England Patriots?
Colin Cowherd explained Wednesday on FS1 why Bryant should send a thank you note to Patriots Wide receiver Josh Gordon during his signing with the Saints.
Cowherd thinks New Orleans has had the success that Gordon has seen since coming to New England and decided it was worth throwing the dice at Bryant, another polarizing receiver at the former Pro Bowl, with both a luggage and a top.
Gordon was traded to the Cleveland Browns Patriots in September after several tumultuous seasons in which he was repeatedly suspended for unsuccessful drug testing. The fresh start helped, as the 27-year-old had 22 assists for 396 yards with two touchdowns in six games with New England. He rushed for 130 yards on the ground with five assists, a top in the season, in the Patriots' 31-17 victory over the Green Bay Packers.
It would be unfair to expect a similar production from Bryant, who just turned 30 on Sunday. The three Pro Bowl selections were already showing signs of regression before being released by the Dallas Cowboys in April, and the Saints' offensive hit home even without him. We do not know what his role will be in New Orleans.
But we can not deny the record of Bryant since the first round (24th overall) in 2010. He has amassed 91 catches on average for 1,311.7 yards with 13.7 touchdowns during a three-year period between 2012 and 2014 and still managed 69 six touchdowns last season for the Cowboys. Maybe he still has something to play in the tank as he joins one of the best teams in the NFL.
And maybe New Orleans was really influenced by Gordon's success in New England. After all, as Cowherd notes, the NFL has always been a league of "copiers".
