WASHINGTON – Latest news of the resignation of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General (local time):
7:10 p.m.
The new Acting Attorney General says he is honored that President Donald Trump has confidence in his ability to lead the Department of Justice.
Matthew Whitaker said Wednesday in a statement that he had pledged to "run a fair ministry applying the highest ethical standards, upholding the rule of law and seeking justice for all Americans."
Whitaker said Jeff Sessions, who was forced to leave his post on Wednesday, is a "dedicated public servant for more than 40 years". He calls Sessions a man of integrity "who has served this nation well."
Whitaker became acting Attorney General after the resignation of Sessions from the Department of Justice. Sessions said in his letter of resignation that the move had been made at Trump's request.

Jeff Sessions left the Department of Justice for the last time as Attorney General.
The sessions ended Wednesday evening with the applause of more than 150 employees gathered in a court of the Department of Justice.
As he was leaving, the sessions seemed moved and said "Thank you" and "God bless" before getting into an SUV waiting.
He also shook hands with his chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, who was appointed Acting Attorney General Wednesday after the resignation of Sessions at the request of the President.
Whitaker told Sessions: "It was an honor, sir."
Relations between Trump and Sessions collapsed just weeks after he took office, when he retired from the task of overseeing the investigation of special advocate Robert Mueller on a possible coordination between the Republican campaign of the President and Russia.

Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins warned the Trump administration not to undermine Special Advocate Robert Mueller's investigation following the dismissal of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
In a tweet Wednesday, Collins expressed concern over the administration's announcement that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein would no longer oversee the investigation into a possible coordination between Trump's Republican campaign in 2016 and Russia.
She tweeted: "It is imperative that the Administration does not obstruct the investigation of Mueller." She added: "The Mueller Special Counsel must be allowed to carry out his work without interference, regardless of who AG is."
The sessions resigned Wednesday at the request of the president. His chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, should now oversee the investigation into the Mueller case.
Whitaker has already discussed a situation in which Trump could fire sessions and then appoint an acting Attorney General who could stifle funding for Mueller's investigation.

5:20 p.m.
Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker is expected to oversee the Special Council's investigation into a possible coordination between the President's Republican campaign and Russia, following the resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Asked whether Whitaker would take control of the investigation, Justice spokeswoman Sarah Flores said Whitaker would be "in charge of all Justice affairs".
President Donald Trump has appointed acting Attorney General Whitaker after the resignation of Wednesday's session. Whitaker had been chief of staff of the sessions.
Once, he mentioned a situation in which Trump could fire sessions and then appoint an acting Attorney General likely to stifle the funding of the investigation of special advocate Robert Mueller.
Trump's relationship with Sessions was eroded just weeks after he took office, when he stepped away from the investigation on Russia. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein oversaw Mueller's work.

The highest democratic party's oversight committee in parliament said Congress should investigate "the real reason" for the "cessation" of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Elijah Cummings, representative of Maryland, said it was not acceptable if President Donald Trump was asking for the resignation of Sessions to interfere in the investigations of the special council on electoral interference in Russia and a possible coordination with Trump employees.
Sessions announced his resignation Wednesday.
Cummings also asks Congress to "confirm" that Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker is refusing to oversee the investigation. Whitaker should oversee the investigation despite his criticism in public statements and the presidency of the campaign witnessed the investigation.
Cummings is expected to chair his committee in January when Democrats take control of the House.

3:20 p.m.
The most democratic judiciary committee in the House says it wants "immediate answers" after Jeff Sessions was forced to leave his position as Attorney General by President Donald Trump.
Representative Jerry Nadler is about to become chair of the Judiciary Committee when Democrats take control of the House in January. He tweeted that "we will hold people accountable".
Trump has long expressed his frustration with regard to the sittings on his challenge to the investigation of the Ministry of Justice on Russia. Democrats worry about the fact that firing sessions are a way to fire special lawyer Robert Mueller and try to end the investigation.
Nadler says that he wants to know why Trump operates this change and "who has authority over the investigation of Special Advisor Mueller?"

3:15 p.m.
The leader of the Senate minority, Chuck Schumer, said it was "paramount" that the investigation of special advocate Robert Mueller be protected by the new attorney general of President Donald Trump.
Trump forced Jeff Sessions to step down from his position as Attorney General Wednesday after the mid-term elections. The president said the session's chief of staff, Matt Whitaker, would replace him for the moment, with a permanent replacement coming.
Schumer says that he finds the time of departure of the sessions "very suspicious". The New York Democrat said it would trigger a "constitutional crisis" if Trump imposed sessions as a "prelude" to the end or limitation of Mueller's investigation.
Trump and Sessions quarreled after the Attorney General withdrew from Mueller's investigation. The President has repeatedly downplayed the sessions in public and expressed regret over his appointment.
___
2:45 p.m.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigned from his role as law enforcement official at the request of President Donald Trump.
The sessions announced plans to resign in a letter to the White House on Wednesday.
Trump announced in a tweet that the chief of staff of the sessions, Matt Whitaker, would become the new Acting Attorney General.
The Attorney General had endured more than a year of scathing criticism and personal criticism from Trump over his challenge after the investigation into a possible coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign.
Trump blamed this decision for opening the door to the appointment of special advocate Robert Mueller, who resumed the investigation on Russia and began considering whether the fact that Trump was monitoring the sessions was part of 39, a broader effort to undermine justice.
