The Chevrolet Silverado could go to the front lines, but not the same one that you can buy. At least not yet.
GM Defense, the new division of General Motors specializing in military machinery, has posted a video on its website that reveals that a Silverado ZH2 electric hydrogen pickup is in preparation. Automotive News reports that the video was presented for the first time at the annual meeting of the US Army Association in October.
The camouflaged truck appears to be based on the all-new 2020 Silverado HD, which the automaker announced with a single image released earlier this year. Both cameras share the same lighting and grid style, and the video describes the Silverado ZH2 as a very durable model.
The Silverado ZH2 is essentially a giant version of the Colorado ZH2, which is being tested with the Army Army's Tank Army Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center and is based on a set of shock absorbers. Multimatic slide valves similar to the Colorado ZR2 high-performance off-road.
Instead of a battery, the Silverado is equipped with three hydrogen tanks for a Hydrotec brand fuel cell that generates electricity and provides stealthy but powerful performance over a distance of 400 km. Military units can convert the expensive JP8 fuel they bring to the field into hydrogen on site and then use it more efficiently in fuel cell vehicles like the ZH2, which can be refueled in a fraction of the time needed at loading. a battery with a similar range. GM is also developing a fully autonomous hydrogen-powered cargo vehicle, called the SURUS, for military applications.
General Motors has not announced any hydrogen-powered consumer vehicle projects, but is working with Honda on fuel cell development and promises to have 20 electric models in its lineup by 2023.
