The Democrats hoped to see Stacey Abrams elected the country's first black governor on Tuesday night. Although she did not concede the race against Georgia on Wednesday morning, Republican Brian Kemp prevailed.
The Georgia race was perhaps the most watched race of the country's governor, with Florida, where another Democratic hopeful, Andrew Gillum, had been beaten by a Republican.
But overall, the evening was largely a success for the Democrats, who overthrew seven states.
The Republicans have only reversed one, Alaska, which was previously governed by an independent, Bill Walker.

The results of the elections for the governorship will undoubtedly be announced as a reprimand of President Donald Trump by the Democrats. Two of the states that rocked Tuesday, Michigan and Wisconsin, became Republicans for Trump in 2016. And Nevada, another state turned blue Tuesday, has not had a Democratic governor for nearly 20 years.
Democrats also toppled two Republican candidates: Scott Walker of Wisconsin (candidate for the presidency of the Republican primary in 2016) and Bruce Rauner of Illinois.
