AMC is producing movies about their hit series, Breaking Bad and the Walking Dead. Could this signal have a shift in the TV and movies spin off?
Fans of AMC's The Walking Dead and breaking Bad will be happy to hear the news for the popular television series.
TWD star Andrew Lincoln will be resuming his now-ending role of Rick Grimes for the upcoming movies, and breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan is working on a film surrounding his series.
However, does this signal a shift in the way we consume television and the future?
Usually, we get movies for popular series that end up too much or cancelation or ratings, among other reasons.
For example, the greatest television series that never Firefly "Finished" with the movie Serenity. While we would have loved four or five seasons Firefly that was never going to happen and we got a full-length movie instead.
Sure, if FOX had just waited a bit and maybe rebooted Firefly after the rapid rise in the popularity of mainstream superhero TV and movies it has been a huge success, but hindsight is 20/20 (and I'm still very, very bitter).
Another, more recent, example of this can be found with NBC's Timeless. A good show with an intricate plot, suspicious acting and the wrong time slot, Timeless performed poorly in live television ratings dominated in online viewership. In fact, the series was canceled by NBC and then re-upped ounce they took a look at online numbers – a rare occurrence for any series.
The second season, but the demand for more Timeless content was clearly there. So, rather than making another season, NBC is a TV movie.
An example where a network should have done so with NBC, as the network attempted to reboot the popular series Heroes with Heroes reborn to disastrous results.
The first season of Heroes is absolutely phenomenal, but the following seasons have become convoluted and ratings declined. Heroes NBC, an opportunity to bring back Heroes Reborn that infinitely culminated in a subpar attempt failed.
However, if they had instead "rebooted" Heroes with one much higher-budget special gold in-theaters movie they could have been fared better.
It should be noted that with breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, the ratings were / are still relatively high and the shows were not canceled. In this case, the actors wanted to leave the time for the series to end.
These movies are an attempt to cash in on the popularity of these two shows by AMC before the actors are done with their respective series forever or fan support begins to dwindle. If only hardcore fans are watching The Walking Dead Right now, anyone who has ever been a fan of the show will probably show up for the movies. It's a brilliant move by both TWD and AMC.
But this is where things get interesting for television as a whole.
If the breaking Bad and The Walking Dead are successful – on the big screen or otherwise – does this become the norm for massively popular series that are ending?
For example, let's take a series that is currently extremely popular The Big Bang Theory.
The Big Bang Theory is currently in its twelfth and final season, Jim Parsons is leaving the series is still averaging over 12 million viewers week to week. That's an insane number of sighters for CBS
If these AMC movies are successful, we can see a final movie for shows that are ending in the future. There is nothing to suggest there will be The Big Bang Theory movie, but, if they could not do it, they would definitely – and I think every network would do the same.
Whether or not you agree with movies being made breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, This endeavor by AMC could change the landscape of television as we know it. Instead of a "final movie" for a movie or movie, we could begin to see movies or even spinoff movies for movies that have been extremely popular for a long time.
And, even if these movies are just an attempt to squeeze every last drop of money they can out of a fanbase, the fans will end up happy because they get to see their favorite series and characters at least one more time.
