On the occasion of Diwali, US President Donald Trump said that the Festival of Lights was a special occasion to reflect on the friendship between India and the United States.

Donald Trump said that First Lady Melania joined him in sending her best wishes for a very happy and memorable Diwali.

He also recognized the "extraordinary" contributions of Americans of Indian descent to the development of the United States.

"Diwali is a special occasion to reflect on the bond of friendship that unites the United States and India," said President Trump in a special message issued Wednesday in Diwali.

"We recognize the extraordinary contributions of Americans of Indian descent to the strength and success of our country.Their achievements in the fields of business and industry, public service, education , scientific research and other areas continue to represent the best of our American virtues and spirit of the Diwali season, "he said.

In affirming that Diwali is a joyful and spiritual moment marked by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists, Donald Trump said that the lighting of lamps symbolized the true meaning of Diwali, which is the triumph of light on darkness and good on evil.

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair Ronna McDaniel also greeted people celebrating Diwali.
