"Several deaths" were confirmed after the killing of at least 11 people by gunfire Wednesday night at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, authorities said.
A police officer was among the victims of bullets during the incident at the Borderline Bar and Grill, located about 40 km west of Los Angeles.
Police said that several hundred people were inside the room at that time.
Captain Garo Kuredjian, head of the Sheriff County of Ventura, said that one MP had been injured while he and other police officers had arrived at the scene and "tried to neutralize the threat".
Police started receiving calls around 11:20 pm (Thursday 2:20), said the captain. That night, the bar was hosting a country college party, according to its Instagram page.
The County of Ventura Fire Department says on Twitter "several ambulances" had been requested.
Aerial footage of the scene showed at least eight police cars in a street with their flashing lights.
A student who said he'd been going to the bar every Wednesday in the past few years told NBC Los Angeles that he had at least 10 friends inside.
"Nobody has been reported," he said in front of the camera without giving his name. "I'd like to hope for the best, but I have no idea."
Two passersby who said they had friends coming to the bar often told NBC Los Angeles that they had talked to a man who had managed to escape the bar.
"He told his story, how he had broken the windows and that he and a few friends had helped to ward off the women, had first saved them," said one of the women, who was not sure. 39 is not identified. "His hands were a little bloody, he had blood on his face, his friend was hit in the shoulder."
The venue opened in 1993 and describes itself as a "paradise for country dancers of all ages". He says that he has hosted many famous acts, including The Beach Boys.
