Several people were injured after an armed gunman opened fire at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California on Wednesday night.

The police were called to the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks around 11:20 pm, the Ventura County Star reported. Officers present at the scene told the newspaper that at least 30 shots had been fired. Several ambulances were called to the area to treat the victims.

Captain Garo Kuredjian, of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, told reporters on Thursday at around 2:30 pm that at least 11 people, including a deputy sheriff, had been injured in the shooting, but could not confirm the state of their state. He stressed that the number of wounded was still "preliminary".

It was not clear whether the shooter had been captured or transported from the scene. Kuredjian, however, said the scene was secure and that there did not seem to be a threat to the public.

Borderline, which presents itself as "the biggest dance floor in the city," hosted an event called "College Country Night" at the time of the shooting. The bar would be a popular spot for students from nearby universities at California Lutheran University and Moorpark College.

Kuredjian said that "hundreds" of people may have been inside the bar at that time.

A witness told KABC-TV that there were a lot of young people "having fun" in the bar when a man came in and started firing. The witness, who escaped unharmed with his son-in-law, said that he saw the gunman shooting several people.

Kuredjian described the Thousand Oaks as "a very safe community."

The shootings do not "happen very often in our neighborhood," said the officer.
