A head-on collision between two buses left 47 dead, where road accidents are common due to bad roads and misbehavior.

Two meeting long-distance buses clashed on Wednesday night near Rusape, about 170 kilometers east of the capital Harare, police spokesman Paul Nyathi said. He added that the death toll could increase because others are seriously injured.

The government newspaper Herald reported that the number of corpses had flooded the morgue of the small town, which can only accommodate 16 corpses.

Bus crashes are common in this southern African country, where speed often means more money for bus teams competing for customers and trying to make as many trips as possible a day.

The road on which the accident occurred has recently resurfaced, as part of the government's attempts to rehabilitate the ruined road infrastructure.
