Cameron Meredith, receiver of the New Orleans Saints, is placed on the injured reserve and will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery, sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN Channel.
The IR move could partly explain the Saints' decision to sign broad receiver Dez Bryant on Wednesday.
Meredith is expected to recover fully, sources said.
Meredith, 26, had been in good health for most of this season. But his knee was obviously a pretty important concern this last season for the Chicago Bears to let him go as a restricted free agent.
Meredith missed the entire 2017 season in Chicago after having torn the left ACL and sustained other injuries to the knee ligaments during the pre-season. The Saints then sent him a $ 10 million bid sheet in April for a two-year term, and the Bears refused to match it.
Prior to the injury, Meredith led the Bears with 66 receptions, 888 yards and four touchdowns in 2016. He is still under contract with the Saints until 2019.
The wide receiver struggled after joining the Saints with zero goals in the last three games.
Meredith is the second wide receiver of the Saints to be placed in the reserve of the wounded last month. Veteran Ted Ginn Jr. started IR on Oct. 18 with a knee injury.
Meredith ends the season with nine catches for 114 yards and one touchdown.
