More than 400 buffaloes were reportedly hunted by lions drowned in a river in northern Botswana this week, the government said.

The drowning took place in the Chobe River, near the border with Namibia.

The first surveys of the authorities of both countries "suggest that an exceptionally large herd of buffaloes was grazing in Namibia when they sunk in the Chobe River," said Wednesday in a statement the Ministry of Environment, Environment and Climate Change. Conservation of Natural Resources and Tourism of Botswana.

"The first indications are that they were driven out by a pride of lions," the ministry said.

"It is estimated that more than 400 animals drowned because of the massive movement of trampling buffaloes and steep riverbanks"

Mass drownings are not uncommon, added the ministry.

The Namibian media reported that the incident occurred on Tuesday night.
