Campfire in Chico balloons at 5,000 acres, thousands evacuated
Thousands of people were ordered to evacuate Thursday several Sierra towns near Chico, while a forest fire was unleashed and quickly reached 5,000 hectares.
The towns of Pulga and Concow in Butte County and most of Paradise were evacuated shortly after the start of the fire at around 6:30 am
The fire, known as the campfire, began in the Camp Creek Road and Pulga Road areas near Highway 70 in Feather River Canyon, officials from the Forest and Wildlife Protection Department said. California fires, Cal Fire.
According to the California Highway Patrol, all areas of Paradise, with the exception of Lower Clark Road, Lower Neil Road and Lower Skyway Road, are subject to mandatory evacuation orders.
The Skyway Road is closed at 9:40, CHP officials said, and residents are being urged to evacuate by other roads. Caltrans announced at 0957 hours that officers had closed Highway 70 south of the light to Highway # 149 northbound.
The Feather River Hospital in Paradise (Butte County) was also evacuated at 9 am, officials said. The fire had jumped a road leading to the hospital.
Nearly 27,000 people live in Paradise. The unincorporated city is about 10 miles east of Chico in the foothills north of Sacramento.
Pulga and Concow are two small, unincorporated rural communities in Butte County. Concow has about 710 residents. Concow had two residents at the sale in 2015, according to media reports.
An evacuation shelter was being opened at the Oroville Nazarene Church, located at 2238 Monte Vista Avenue. in Oroville. The former county hospital located at 2279 Del Oro Avenue. in Orovile accepts small animals.
