The number of measles cases reported in South Carolina has doubled since last week, according to the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).
When investigating multiple cases of measles, DHEC said it also informed people who may have been exposed to the virus.
There are currently six measles cases in Spartanburg County, DHEC reported.
On November 2, DHEC confirmed three cases of measles in the northeastern county. These were the first cases of measles reported to S.C. in 20 years, reported the state.
The first three documented cases involved "unvaccinated children, not of school age and not attending day care," according to DHEC. The three most recent cases of the virus were not revealed, but according to DHEC, none of the cases concerned "a school or day care center".
But DHEC warns people who may have been recently in one of the multiple emergency care facilities when people with measles have gone "while they were contagious."
"Measles is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and even death," according to DHEC. "The first symptoms of measles include fever, cough, and runny nose. These symptoms are followed by a rash. The rash usually lasts five or six days.
According to DHEC, measles is "very contagious" and "spreads in the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes".
The best way to prevent measles is to get vaccinated, according to DHEC, adding that vaccination is also essential to prevent the spread of measles.
"I can not encourage enough people to review their vaccination cards and make sure they are aware of all vaccinations," said Dr. Linda Bell, Chief Epidemiologist at DHEC, in a press release .
A case of measles was also confirmed in Georgetown County early in the year, according to the Lexington Medical Center.
