Hospital employee fired after wearing Confederate shirt with noose

A hospital employee from Mississippi became viral this week – and is now unemployed – thanks to his election day outfit choice.

Clayton Hickey, of Olive Branch, thought it would be a good idea to wear a Confederate flag t-shirt with a noose and the words "Mississippi Justice" engraved on the front.

Her photo was taken to the polls Tuesday and put online for all to see. Social media users have called Hickey for the movement, many calling him racist.

The former police officer was wrongly identified as an election worker before local media revealed his true occupation.

"Clayton Hickey must be fired immediately," wrote a Twitter user in response. "We can not trust him to provide care to ALL @RegOneHealthFDN patients, nor should he be able to be hired by anyone in a role that is responsible for the well-being of others."

Hickey's employer, Memphis Regional One Health, received innumerable messages on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – calling for his dismissal – before officials finally decided to give the EMT the green light.

"Regional One Health is committed to creating a safe, comfortable and comfortable work environment for our patients, our customers, our employees and the medical staff," the hospital said in a statement, noting that "all allegations of improper behavior and breach of trust involving employees are reviewed and considered".

"We understand and appreciate the intense feelings of this situation, but it is our duty to exercise due diligence to verify the truth," the statement says.

"As of today, November 8, 2018, we have completed our investigation and what we have learned has resulted in the dismissal of the employee in question. Regional One Health keeps employees at a high level. We are committed to continuing our mission to provide exceptional care and exceptional services to all. This includes promoting a safe and secure work and care environment for all. Conduct contrary to these principles is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. "
